Educate & Appreciate during Pharmacy Week: October 16th – 22nd, 2016
Sep 1st, 2016 - Pharmacy Week was created as a way to recognize “the invaluable contributions that pharmacists and technicians make to patient care in hospitals, ambulatory care clinics, and other healthcare settings.” This is the ideal week to show appreciation to pharmacists and pharmacy technicians by acknowledging, and educating about, the important roles they play in healthcare and patient care. The contributions of pharmacy technicians are even recognized on their own day: October 18th is National Pharmacy Technician Day.
Pharmacy Staff ensure safe and effective medication use, but their contributions to the medical field are often overlooked. The American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) has a list of “Pharmacy Week Ideas to Try” to spread knowledge about the field and create appreciation for pharmacists:
- Open House/Pharmacy Tours – “This activity allows you to give your organization’s administrator and other staff a glimpse into the daily operations of the pharmacy. During the tour, describe the range of pharmacy activities and share success stories about improved patient outcomes and enhanced medication safety.”
- Meet and Greet – “Invite patients and their caregivers to meet the pharmacy staff and ask questions about their medication therapies. Because some patients may be unable to leave their rooms, caregivers may appreciate a quick diversion and can bring materials back to patients.”
- Brown-Bag Workshops – “Host a brown-bag session at ambulatory care clinics, health fairs, or when speaking to senior citizens’ groups. Encourage patients to bring their prescription and over-the-counter medications and discuss their drug therapy regimens with a pharmacist.”
- Take your Legislator to Work – “Hosting a site visit for your legislators is one of the best ways to educate them about the roles that pharmacists play in patient care. Make sure that a pharmacist in your facility is conducting high-level patient care services such as chronic care, critical care, disease management or wellness clinics, chemotherapy, or transitions of care. For more assistance in planning a visit for your legislator, contact ASHP's Government Relations Division at firstname.lastname@example.org.”
Whether you choose to do the Open House, the Brown-Bag Workshop, or even choose to host an appreciation lunch for your pharmacy staff, Corporate Caterers’ Appetizer Packages are the perfect option to feed the masses and show some love for your pharm team. The Set Sail to the East platter includes a delicious mix of Asian-inspired bites, the Game Plan includes game-day favorites like spicy chicken wings, and the Special Thoughts Platter includes an elegant, but simple selection of artichoke and spinach dip.
